Hamburger SV cannot count on further financial help from the city for the renovation of the Volksparkstadion for the 2024 European Football Championship. Hamburger SV cannot count on further financial help from the city for the renovation of the Volksparkstadion for the 2024 European Football Championship. State Councilor for Sport Christoph Holstein made this clear on NDR. The city had bought the stadium property in the Volkspark from the second division club in autumn 2020 for a market value of 23.5 million euros.

“We have contractually agreed that all modernization and renovation measures that HSV needs for the euro will be financed from this money. And accordingly there is not a cent on top of that, »said Holstein on NDR television.

Holstein doubted the alleged cost of modernizing the stadium of 20 million euros. “We are currently hearing very high sums that are required to modernize the stadium,” he said on NDR-90.3. “But what you have to know is that according to our calculations, the specifications of UEFA come to a small, single-digit million amount.”

However, the HSV refers to the increased construction and raw material prices, which are driving up the overall costs. A large part of the 23.5 million euros was used to cushion the economic consequences for the club from the corona pandemic.

In the “Bild” newspaper, HSV shareholder Klaus-Michael Kühne pleaded that Hamburg and HSV Fußball AG should forgo the EM “to avoid the extremely expensive stadium renovation that HSV cannot finance”. In the current situation, the focus must be on “building a powerful HSV team,” said the 85-year-old entrepreneur, who holds just over 15 percent of the AG. He would make “limited funds available” for this.

Holstein called HSV’s exit from the EM project a “super meltdown – primarily for the club, because then all potential sponsors and supporters would have to ask themselves whether what they are planning is right”.

Five European Championship games are planned for Hamburg. In addition, the European Championship draw is planned for December 2, 2023 in the Elbphilharmonie. In addition to the Hanseatic city, Berlin, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt am Main, Gelsenkirchen, Cologne, Leipzig, Munich and Stuttgart are planned as venues.
