Hering: Stimulate pioneering work in the European partnership

Budding butchers, bakers and carpenters from Rhineland-Palatinate should be able to gain two to three months of experience in other European countries. Budding butchers, bakers and carpenters from Rhineland-Palatinate should be able to gain two to three months of experience in other European countries. Partner companies should first be found in Mainz and Dijon, said the President of the Landtag, Hendrik Hering, of the German Press Agency in Mainz before a trip to the partner region of Burgundy-Franche-Comté.

“Rhineland-Palatinate is the most European federal state,” said Hering. The 60-year-old partnership with Burgundy predates the Franco-German treaty and is the oldest partnership between two regions in Europe. “Rhineland-Palatinate did pioneering work 60 years ago and we want to do it again.”

20 citizens each from Dijon and Mainz were randomly selected and asked about future topics. As a result, there should now be an intensive exchange on the topics of climate protection and renewable energies as well as on democracy and European awareness. The regional council of Burgundy-Franche-Comté is working on the first topic with the Ministry of Climate Protection in Mainz.

In addition, youth exchanges between all four partner regions of Rhineland-Palatinate, Burgundy-Franche-Comté, Oppeln in Poland and Central Bohemia in the Czech Republic are to be intensified, also in order to promote young people’s awareness of democracy. “An exchange is a formative experience for 16/17-year-olds,” said Hering. “Personal contacts with people in the neighboring country make a piece resistant to populist slogans,” emphasized Hering, pointing out that the number of people living in democracies is falling worldwide.

Almost 60 percent of the applications for the citizens’ fund established by the Aachen Treaty between Germany and France in 2019 came from Rhineland-Palatinate, said Hering. This documents the strong European orientation of the federal state. Another important pillar of the partnership with the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region is the House of Rhineland-Palatinate in Dijon, which was founded by the state parliament 31 years ago.

The partnership association “Rheinland-Pfalz/4er-Netzwerk” currently has 260 members – associations, friendship groups and municipalities. Since it was founded in 2018, an average of five new municipalities have been added each year. In the current year, ten municipalities could have been won.
