The students at a secondary school in Essen who were seriously injured after consuming an unknown liquid are on the mend. This was announced by a spokesman for the Essen fire brigade on Saturday at the request of the German Press Agency. The five severely affected students aged 12 and 14 were taken to clinics for treatment on Friday and were to be released after 24 hours of observation.

The five severely affected students aged 12 and 14 were taken to clinics for treatment on Friday and were to be released after 24 hours of observation.

A total of eight students had complained of symptoms, three had already been picked up by their parents on Friday. They were informed by the fire department and asked to go to a hospital. The fire brigade had secured a 1.5 liter PET bottle on Friday. According to the fire department, the bottle was apparently in a waste basket in the schoolyard.

After the first unsuccessful tests, the bottle was taken to the analytical task force of the fire brigade in Dortmund for further examinations. There are still no analysis results for the type of substance, the Essen police said on Saturday. The analyzes would take some time.

The police are investigating because of dangerous bodily harm against unknown, said a spokesman. Children in the hospital would also be interviewed, as far as they were able to do so. The Essen police did not provide any information on Saturday as to whether the surveys had already taken place and whether there were any new findings.

According to the fire brigade, the rescue workers were alerted twice on Friday: Once around 12 p.m., when a child complained of nausea after physical education class and was taken to the hospital. A good hour later there was another alarm: four other children showed severe symptoms, two of them were unconscious. The parents of three other children, who had already been at home because they were unwell, were then contacted by telephone.
