The pharmaceutical company Aurora was the only company in Saxony-Anhalt to deliver the first medical cannabis to the German Cannabis Agency. They now want to produce about a ton of cannabis flowers per year, said Axel Gille, President of Aurora Europe on Thursday. The company, with its production facility in the chemical park in Leuna, is one of three companies that produce cannabis on behalf of the state. The other two production sites of other companies are in Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein.

The three companies won a corresponding tender from the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) in 2019. Overall, the tender stipulates that the three companies will produce a good ten tons spread over four years. That makes about 2.6 tons per year. According to Gille, the demand for medical cannabis in Germany is between six and eight tons. The difference is obtained from foreign producers from Canada and Denmark, among others.

The cannabis is produced in Leuna under strictly guarded conditions in an indoor production facility. Around 25 cm of reinforced concrete, over 600 security sensors and around 130 cameras protect the site from any break-ins. 20 employees take care of the cultivation of the plants, whose flowers are delivered to the pharmacies in Germany by the wholesaler Cansativa after the harvest.

Aurora Deutschland GmbH, headquartered in Berlin, is an approved pharmaceutical wholesaler with a license to manufacture so-called medicinal cannabis. The company is part of Aurora Europe GmbH, which in turn is a subsidiary of publicly traded Canadian cannabis manufacturer Aurora Cannabis Inc., headquartered in Edmonton.
