Russian EU ambassador: Nord Stream 1 could fail completely

After the reduction in Russian gas deliveries through the Nord Stream 1 Baltic Sea pipeline, a complete shutdown of the most important supply line for Germany cannot be ruled out. At the International Economic Forum in St. Petersburg on Thursday, Russia’s EU Ambassador Vladimir Chizhov said that the line could be completely shut down because of the problems with repairing turbines in Canada. “I think that would be a disaster for Germany,” he said, according to the Russian newspaper Kommersant.

Germany should consider repairing the turbines on its own territory so that they don’t have to be shipped to Canada, the diplomat said. As announced, the Russian energy company Gazprom further reduced its gas deliveries to Germany through Nord Stream on Thursday night. The gas giant justified the step with delays in repair work.

Gas delivery to Germany: throttling by 60 percent in two days

Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck called the situation serious, but it does not endanger the security of supply in Germany. Contrary to Gazprom’s statement that the reason for the cutback was delays in repair work, Habeck suspects a political decision behind it.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov rejected this. Rather, the problems were related to the sanctions imposed on Russia by the West, he said. “We only know that there were really problems with the turbines and with the repairs, some turbines are not coming back, they are being held back somewhere.” has nothing to do with us.” The energy technology group Siemens Energy had also announced that a gas turbine overhauled in Canada could not currently be returned from Montréal due to the Russian sanctions.

Gazprom had already announced on Tuesday that it would reduce the previously planned daily volume by around 40 percent from 167 million to 100 million cubic meters of gas per day and pointed to delays in the repair of gas compressors. The renewed reduction on Thursday night to 67 million cubic meters means a reduction of around 60 percent within two days. Russia had repeatedly promoted the commissioning of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.
