The first photo of Ryan Gosling as Ken sent fans into euphoria. But it will still be a while before the “Barbie” film hits the cinemas. That’s what we know so far about the crazy strip.

Judging by the euphoria that is currently prevailing, it will be the film of the year 2023. That is when the “Barbie” film is supposed to hit the cinemas, and the hype already seems huge. It was triggered by the publication of a single photo: It shows actor Ryan Gosling almost shirtless and with bleached hair as Ken. A pop candy colored mansion can be seen in the background.

Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie in “Barbie”

A photo of Margot Robbie starring seven weeks ago was already raising expectations for a dream in pink. But don’t be fooled by these first impressions: “Barbie” could be very different than most people think.

Robbie already hinted at that in December 2020 when she spoke about the project. “Whatever you think,” she told The Hollywood Reporter at the time, “we’re going to bring you something completely different – something you didn’t know you wanted.”

The authors behind the project also guarantee that it will not be a brightly colored cinematic counterpart to the Aqua song “Barbie Girl”: The screenplay was written by spouses Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, both known as idiosyncratic filmmakers who have moved from the independent to the art house cinema.

Gerwig, who will also direct, recently delivered the film adaptation of the novel “Little Women” and received her third Oscar nomination for it.

Greta Gerwig directs

With the choice of Gerwig and Baumbacher, the project took a whole new turn. In 2018, Sony actually wanted to implement the material with Amy Schumer, later with Anne Hathaway. But then “Barbie” moved from Sony to Warner, and now blockbuster specialist Patty Jenkins (“Wonder Woman”) was traded as the director.

Now the film has taken a different fork. But in which direction it will go – nobody has revealed that yet. So fans have to be patient: “Barbie” won’t be in American cinemas until July 21, 2023. Until then, they can enjoy the half-naked Ryan “Ken” Gosling.
