The cultural summer festival brings music, art and theater to Berlin's neighbourhoods

90 days, 90 locations and 90 events that couldn’t be more different. In the courtyard of Podewil on Klosterstraße, Senator for Culture Klaus Lederer (left) and selected organizers heralded the start of the Berlin Cultural Summer Festival 2022 in bright sunshine on Friday. It starts at the weekend and ends on September 11th. A look at the events reveals that the program of this year’s summer festival, under the patronage of the Berlin cultural projects and the Outside City Platform, has it all.

Big opening open air on the Tempelhofer Feld

“Art is part of the DNA of this city,” Klaus Lederer began his speech at the press conference on Friday. Two years of pandemic and the on-sight driving in the cultural sector have led to a certain alienation of people from art and culture, at least that is what the Senator for Culture suggested. That’s why, Lederer continues, the aim of the cultural summer festival is to “bring art to the people” and to reawaken the “special Berlin feeling”. We have made sure that there is something for every taste and in every neighborhood. Not only in Mitte and Kreuzberg, but “from Spandau to Marzahn-Hellersdorf”.

The festival starts on Saturday with a grand opening open-air concert at Tempelhofer Feld. A light show from the Burning Man Festival will accompany the music, food and drinks. Like all other events during the 90-day festival, this event is free of charge. Attention: Admission to Open-Air is only at the north-east corner of the field via Platz der Luftbrücke.

Unter den Linden closed for a big open-air concert: State Opera for everyone

A kind of second starting signal for the cultural summer festival will be the free concert of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, “State Opera for everyone”. On Sunday, the Staatskapelle will perform Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony in E minor on Bebelplatz and on the boulevard, which is closed on both sides. According to the director of the State Opera, Matthias Schulz, the whole of Berlin is invited: “Come to us and enjoy it. With the culture concert, we want to give the entire project a big boost and remind people after two years of the pandemic how important culture is.”

Kick-off for the art festival “48 hours Neukölln” in the Eisstation

The cultural summer festival also has smaller series of events in its program, for example the art festival “48 hours Neukölln” (24th to 26th June). Spokesman Denhart von Harling told the Berliner Zeitung: “We are particularly looking forward to the warm-up of this year’s festival at the Eisstadion in Neukölln. There will be live music, spoken word performances and discussions about the diversity of Berlin’s cultural scene.” The event in the ice stadium on June 23 will be organized together with the İÇ İÇE Festival for New Anatolian Music. The event starts at 6 p.m., doors open at 5 p.m.

The Kultursommerfestival Berlin will take place from June 18 to September 11, 2022. You can find the program here: www.draussenstadt.berlin/de/kultursommerfestival/kalender
