A humanitarian airlift to the Ukrainian border for war wounded and seriously ill people officially started on Saturday at Mönchengladbach Airport. The first flight on “Ukraine Airlift Day” took off towards the Ukrainian border on Saturday afternoon, reported one of the initiators, Uwe Lutz from the board of the European Bonanza Society (EBS). With the “Ukraine Airlift Day” one wants to attract more volunteers – aircraft owners as well as pilots.

Singer Smudo from the Fantastischen Vier supports the donation-financed flights to the Ukrainian border as patron of the project. The 54-year-old amateur pilot has announced that he will also be setting off on an aid flight himself in the next few weeks.

The day of action is intended to draw attention to the voluntary work of commercial and private pilots at Mönchengladbach Airport. The relief flights have been around for a long time. War wounded and seriously ill are flown to hospitals in countries of the European Union for care. In addition to the EBS, the organizers are also the aid organizations Humanitarian Pilots Initiative (HPI) and Ukraine Air Rescue (UAR).

The smaller aircraft types used are approved for horizontal transport and are also suitable for flexible use even on the shortest grass runways, explained EBS. The Ukraine itself should not be flown to, so the pilots landed on the Polish side. On the outward flight, the pilots transport medicines or medical equipment that are urgently needed in Ukraine. Numerous lives have already been saved in this way.
